Legislation and Multicultural issues

Introduction

The following cluster will explore the complex interconnectedness between legislation and multiculturalism in the contemporary democratic contexts of Europe. The cluster addresses legislative issues around multiculturalism both on the level of the EU and on national governmental level.

Legislation is the arena where power structures become institutionalized and it is an essential value-producing and reflecting machinery that reproduces racialised, nationalist, heteronormative, gendered, religious and able-bodied notions of otherness under a pretext of naturalized neutrality. The cluster gives learners an opportunity to deconstruct the values that European and other notions of multiculturalism presuppose. Legislation and multiculturalism is a case in point for a postcolonial approach and this cluster can be a practical rehearsal in intersectional thinking and analysis.
